Cape Fear Isshinryu Staff

Black Belts

Brent Holland- Ni-dan

Sensei Holland started the Cape Fear dojo in 2001 under the guidance of Renshi Tim Cunningham.  The school has grown from the original enrollment of three students to its current size.  Sensei Holland was promoted to black belt in 1992 by Sensei Cox and Kyoshi Dan Glover.  He was promoted to Ni-dan in 2001 by Renshi Cunningham.

Brian Cox- Yon-dan

Sensei Cox started his Isshinryu training in 1981 in Jacksonville North Carolina with Kyoshi  Dan Glover. Promoted to Black Belt in 1986 by Mr. Glover, he began teaching in Wilmington in 1988 and is the highest ranking member of the Cape Fear Isshinryu Dojo. Brian Cox was promoted to Yon-dan  in July of 2003.

Brown Belts

Byron Holland- Ik-Kyu

Byron was among the original three students of the Cape Fear  dojo.  Currently holds the rank of Ik-kyu or first degree brown belt, he is the highest ranking kyu grade and is often seen running class or leading students in their training.  Commutes from New Bern, NC in order to be a part of the class.

Ashley McBeth-  San-kyu

Ashley originally began working out in the late 1980's under Sensei Cox.  Resumed his training in February, 2002 and has been a staple in the adult class ever since. So intense in his training, many of us have jokingly accused him of being on some sort of illegal substance.  Promoted to brown belt in August of 2003.

Beth Holland- San-kyu

One of the original three "living room" students, Beth was promoted to brown belt in August of 2003. She  serves as the good natured dojo mother to many of our kids (and adults...) Beth and Sensei Holland have been married since April, 2000.
